Lighting Global Quality Assurance evolves and becomes VeraSol
The World Bank Group's Lighting Global program aims to support the sustainable growth of the off-grid solar energy market in order to rapidly increase access to modern and reliable energy for the 759 million people who do not have access to it.
For more than a decade, Lighting Global has established itself as the quality reference framework for the off-grid pico-solar industry through its quality assurance program.
By working with the entire value chain to establish quality standards, promote sustainable products and protect consumers, Lighting Global has helped to grow and stabilize a fledgling industry.
Today, technological developments and consumer needs are driving the market towards more powerful and productive products. As consumers move up the energy ladder, the need to extend the quality framework beyond lighting increases.
Recognizing this need, Lighting Global formed a partnership with CLASP and the Schatz Energy Research Center at Humboldt State University (Schatz Center) to launch an independent quality assurance program in service of the off-grid solar sector.
In February, CLASP and the Schatz Energy Research Center launched VeraSol, an evolved quality assurance program that responds to the market’s growing needs.
VeraSol builds upon the strong quality assurance framework developed by Lighting Global. The program will continue to test and certify pico-solar products and solar home system kits through its global network of accredited test labs.
To meet growing industry demand, VeraSol has also expanded its services to encompass appliances and productive uses. The program now offers technical support for refrigerators, cooking appliances, fans, TVs and solar-powered irrigation pumps.
In early 2020, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), a leading international standards organization, unanimously approved the publication of quality standards for pico-solar products and solar home system kits based on the Lighting Global Quality Standards.
Once published, the new IEC standards will open the door to the widespread national adoption of these standards, benefiting manufacturers, distributors, and consumers.
An evolution of Lighting Global Quality Assurance, the VeraSol program supports high-performing, durable off-grid products that expand access to modern energy services. VeraSol builds upon the strong foundation for quality assurance laid by the World Bank Group and expands its services to encompass off-grid appliances, productive use equipment, and component-based solar home systems.
Like Lighting Global Quality Assurance, the VeraSol program is managed by CLASP in collaboration with the Schatz Energy Research Center at Humboldt State University. Foundational support is provided by the World Bank Group’s Lighting Global program, UKaid, IKEA Foundation, Good Energies Foundation, and others.
